Sfantu Gheorghe, Delta Dunarii, 2010

Sfantu Gheorghe, Danube Delta, Romania

I spent :

200 EUR

I'd recommend this destination for:

Places to Eat & Drink

  • Green Village

Lovely camping place, but fast food type of food. Eat here only if you have too, especially the fish.

Places to Stay

  • Pensiunea Lucia

Nice 3 stars pension near the camping, where your host cooks amazing dishes and organizes boat trips though the canals.

Notes

This was my first time in Danube Delta, and I just loved it. It's like a parallel world to busy Bucharest! We left on a Thursday morning driving till Tulcea, parked there and took the fast boat to Sf Gheorghe. It's about 120 KM on the Danube = ~2-3 h by boat. We made reservations from home at this nice pension called Lucia, and we arrived sometime in the evening. It was raining, but then again we knew the bad weather forecast when we left. We walked a bit through the village, then dine at our place where our host made us a yummy dish: sheat fish (somn) in the oven with vegetables and garlic sauce. Mmm...

The second day it was even colder, so we decided that it was the perfect time to go fishing. We put all or clothes on, took some traditional fishing tools that we found at the pension and off we went to look for bait. After a few hours finally the string of my stick stretched and I caught my first fish! Yay! Well, it was small but so beautifully colored! We released it back in the water, and we stayed until the evening. Don't ask me about the capture - the important thing is that we had fun and, well... the string stretched a couple more times :)

Second dish that evening: carp fish with red sauce and onion in the oven + cucumber salad. It tasted somewhat like the beef we prepare like that. It was an interesting combination, and very delicious to.

Third day there was a beautiful sunny day: perfect for a walk to the beach we thought, and so we went. We saw the beautiful Black Sea shore with a wild empty beach. At an end one course of the Danube was flowing into the sea and there were some powerful streams and whirlpools, brr. We stayed to get tanned a bit, and walked around taking some lovely photos.

In the afternoon mr. Chirila, our host took us with the boat to see the birds and a very young isle - Sahalin - formed in the last 50 years by the Danube. Also Lacul Rosu, a young lake that is in formation as the island closes one of the Danube course that flows into the Black Sea. Spectacular! It's like the birds paradise there - you could easily spend a whole day birdwatching as 85% of the birds in Romania live here: pelicans, seagulls, cormorants, swans with their cuffs. Oh, we also had mr. Chirila's dog with us, wthat enjoyed the ride as well and the wind blowing his ears. He was sooo funny!

Last traditional dinner was grilled sheat fish (somn) with lemon and garlic sauce. Now that was a perfect ending of this trip.

We left Saturday morning at 6.50 a.m. with the only boat to Tulcea from Navrom. I waked up for real in the ship, sipping a good coffee, happy to have found one of my top vacation picks and it's actually in Romania! Please don't go there, I don't want to see Vama Veche's story repeat in Sf. Gheaorghe.
