Thassos, Greece

Kavala

Just came back from Greece, where I spent a nice vacation on Thassos, the closest island from Romania - about 12 hours driving if you choose to go by car like we did. We're familiar with Romania driving and all, but whenever you choose to drive through Bulgaria you better have a detailed map with you. And would help a lot if you understand their alphabet.

Well, at the end of the 12 hours drive you reach Kavala, a beautiful old city at the sea (photos below). This is the point where you will have to take the ferry for Thassos if you ever plan to go there. Although we were tired, the bay area looked so good, and the sunset view from the ferry so nice, and the smell of the sea and the salt anticipating our vacation, that you instantly forget the pain of the long drive and just stand there on the ferry, admiring the seagulls flying around us. Beautiful!

Some Thassos info

- High, rocky island in the northern part of Greece
- Vegetation consists of pine trees and olive trees in the mountains, palm trees, flowers and beautiful gardens near the beach :)
- One main road going round the island, about 80 km, then small roads going up and down towards the cities and beach
- Main city is Limenas or Thassos, however you wish to call it :) the island has a couple more small cities, but Limenas is the main port, that links the island by ferry wth Kavala or Keramoti
- Thassos is one of the few islands that is still inhabited by locals, not dedicated only to the tourists. What would you do on the island if you were living there, besides tourism? Well, take care of some olive trees, do some beekeeping and sell honey to the tourists, grow some goats maybe... but most of the time you would enjoy the water and the sun! :)
- Also on the island you cand see wild goats walking free on the mountains, coming down to drink some salted Aegean seawater and pose for some tourists. Like me :)

Swiming with the fish

As for me, I wanted to discover the island on my own, and of course, spend a lot of time on the beach and get some sun and salt in my hair :) And so I did.
